'A clear, intense picture of life in Occupied France, as seen first by an escaper and then by an SOE organiser' (Foot). The book 'gives a matchless account of how to live hour by hour, never knowing whether you will see the next through: De Gaulle told him [the auhor] in a private interview that this is the best account of life in the maquis, though he could not say so in public' (ODNB).
