Formed in 1916 as D Company RTC, it and C Company were the first two units ever to engage in a tank battle [at Flers]. In WWII it was redesignated 4 RTR and served first with the BEF where it was virtually destroyed at Arras, and then at Tobruk where the battalion was lost. In 1945, the regiment was reformed by the redesignation of 144th Regiment RAC. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Sutcliffe, p.127.
