Dustwrapper artwork by James Lucas. Dedicated to Chekhov and first published in 1900, the work was later extensively revised by Gorky for republication in 1923. This is the first UK edition of the revised text, based on that translated by Margaret Wetlin and published by Moscow's Foreign Languages Publishing House in 1955. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
