One of the most lavish publishing centenary histories, naturally emphasising the firm's relationships with its most notable authors including Ainsworth, Carlyle, Forster, Meredith, Trollope and, above all, Dickens. Bale was Managing Director of the fim from c.1914 to 1930 (see pp.272-4 et seq., plate facing p.272).
