Description: Hutchinson,, [1961]. 8vo., Second Impression, with frontispiece, 12 plates and 5 maps in the text, tiny signature on front free endpaper; black cloth, backstrip lettered in red and white, red top, case a little loose else a bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter with small loss (affecting lettering) at head and tail of of backstrip. Published a month after the first edition. Classic study of the notorious gulf between High Command and the Front Line on the Western Front in 1915, particularly the disastrous generalship of Second Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and Loos. Compiled with free access to the private files of Liddell Hart, it takes its title from the well-known quotation: Ludendorff: 'The English fight like lions.' Hoffman: 'But don't we know that they are lions led by donkeys'. This work is the inspiration for Joan Littlewood's acclaimed stage musical 'Oh, What a Lovely War!'. Enser, p.23.
