Written for the use of junior officers of the Royal Engineers and those of the Honourable East India Company's Service, Frome's extensive treatise was first published from REE Chatham in 1839. Its value as a standard text was swiftly recognised in both military and civilian sectors and the third edition was exhausted by 1862. This is the fourth (first Warren) edition, considerably expanded as well as revised.
