Description: Longman Orme Brown Green Longmans,, 1839[-40]. 4 vols., 8vo., First Edition, small neat contemporary signature on half-title of first volume; original black cloth, boards blocked in blind, backs with four flat bands in blind, second compartments lettered and numbered in gilt, uncut, primrose endpapers, backstrips mildly pulled at heads (short split at head in lower joint of third volume), a bright, clean set in wholly unrestored publisher's period binding. With 16pp publisher's catalogue (dated July 1839) bound in at rear of first volume. Each volume has the well-known burgundy printed label of Cawthorn's British & Foreign Public Library mounted on upper board. Cawthorn's, in Cockspur Street off Charing Cross, was a much-loved London institution for almost three-quarters of the nineteenth century. Complete sets are scarce. The fourth volume, published a year after the other three, is often wanting. A LOVELY SET IN PERIOD BINDING AND WITH A SPLENDID CONTEMPORARY LONDON PROVENANCE.
