[c.1875]. 8vo., with copper-engraved portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present) and 63 fine copper-engraved portraits by Scriven; original brown cloth, upper board ruled and blocked in black, gilt back, uncut, very neatly recased with terracotta endpapers, a very good, bright, clean copy. With 16pp publisher's catalogue (dated 1881) bound in at end. Published in Bickers' series 'English Gentleman's Library', this is arguably the best illustrated edition of this famous memoir of the Court of Charles II. The fine portraits by Scrivens are engraved after Cooper, Lely, Mignard, Parmentier, Rigaud, Vandyck and others. Scarce in this condition. Davies 898 (recording the Boyer translation of 1714 variously annotated and reissued). See also Todd & Bowden 53Aa (recording the first Scott edition of 1811).
