Title: In the Court of the Archbishop of Canterbury [Benson]. Read and Others v. The Lord Bishop of Lincoln [Edward King]. Judgement Nov, 21 1890. THE LINCOLN JUDGEMENT
Description: Macmillan,, 1890. 8vo., First Edition; sewed as issued, wanting original wrappers (but binding wholly sound), a very good, bright, clean copy. First edition of Archbishop Benson's famous 'Lincoln Judgment', following the ecclesiastical trial of Edward King, Lord Bishop of Lincoln, charged with eight ritual offences carried out in the Diocese of Lincoln. One of the most important ecclesiastical trials relating to the Oxford Movement, the case delivered two fundamental judgements. First, a binding legal decision on certain disputed questions of ritual, and secondly that the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Canterbury alone is sufficient to try one of his suffrgan bishops. A rare survival.
