The author's record of a two month's journey from Shanghai to Chung-king, with perceptive and detailed observations on the revolution, trade, imports, exports, taxation and other commercial aspects. In addition Little makes copious notes on the geography, flora and fauna, commercial and cultural activities and historical contexts. Through his journey he argues for the voyage to be repeated by steamship, a venture not realised until he himself attempted it in a tiny steamboat some fifteen years later.
