Title: Pemmican Made at Fort McPherson, a Hudson's Bay Company Post Sixty-Five Miles Within the Arctic Circle and Two Thousand Nine Hundred and Seventy-Eight Miles Northwest of Winnipeg
Description: Winnipeg: Manitoba Free Press (1902). Stapled pamphlet, facsimile reprint of an original pamphlet published by the Manitoba Free Press in 1902. Illustrated with line drawings. Includes five pages of statistics at back on The Canadian Northwest (Manitoba and the Northwest Territories). Although not a great quality reprint -- it leaves you guessing at some of the numbers -- this is still a fascinating read. From Pp11: At the request of the Winnipeg Free Press, instructions were sent early this year to the Hudson's Bay Company's post on Peel River, known as Fort McPherson, within a hundred miles of the Arctic Ocean, to have a quantity of pemmican specially prepared and sent to Winnipeg for the purpose of being put up here in small sacks to be sent out as Christmas remembrances by the Free Press. After describing the incredible journey the reindeer pemmican made (the buffalo had long been hunted to extinction), a few pages later we read: After being received in Winnipeg, the pemmican was divided up and packed in little sacks, one of which is presented herewith. This reindeer pemmican is procurable only in the far North. Tight and unmarked, a very good or better copy with zero information as to which publisher reprinted the pamphlet or when or where it was reprinted. 55 grams. We welcome all reasonable offers on our books and also offer local curbside pick-up.
