From the introduction: This book is about a very special kind of hospital. It was the first sanatorium in the prairie provinces for patients with tuberculosis. At first it was intended to admit only those who had early and treatable disease, but it soon grew into a specialized hospital which cared for people at any stage of the disease. It became a model and an inspiration for others that followed. Its story begins in the early years of the twentieth century when concerned and imaginative people saw a great need and resolved to meet it. This book is mainly about the sanatorium itself rather than about the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba; but the two influenced each other so greatly that a history would be incomplete which did not deal with both. Through several decades the sanatorium grew, adapted to new knowledge and adopted new treatments which saved many lives. As the tuberculosis epidemic waned in the south but spread like wildfire to the north, it could at last extend its services to the aboriginal people whose need was greatest. In the last phase when tubeerculosis seemed to have been defeated -- the miracle of the empty beds -- it closed its doors as a sanatorium but became a smaller institution with a less vital but still very necessary function. We welcome all reasonable offers on our books.
