Abstract: The Assiniboine Forest Natural History Area is located within the City of Winnipeg. Due to the proximity of the park to the city center which generates intense urban pressures, and given the ever-increasing demands for natural emphasis recreation, preservation and/or conservation of the natural resources of the park is vital. The management of this unique area is possible only through the application of specific guidelines based upon the area resources. The objectives of this practicum are to assess the existing data available on the Assiniboine Forest; update the information and fill existing data gaps; and through analysis, recommend appropriate action(s) to allow recreation and public enjoyment while maintaining the quality of the resource. This report concludes that the Assiniboine Forest is a special feature and that the diversity of wildlife and resources presents Winnipeg residents with a most difficult challenge: effective management. Options to management include the introduction or re-introduction of native species, habitat enhancement through active measures such as burning and passive measures such as zoning to prevent over-use and the development of formalized public education/interpretation programming. Bookseller note: this comprehensive practicum provides detailed information on all the flora and fauna of the park, as well as physical features including bedrock and surficial geology, relief and drainage, hydrology, soils, grasses and marshy plants, tree species, as well as a record of daily maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall for the summer of 1979. There are comprehensive lists for bird families and species identified; mamallian families and species; amphibians; fish species; and reptile species. Inluded is a summary of breeding-bird census. This thorough study ends with a section on terrestrial ecosystems (Typha Marsh, Willow Scrub, Wet Meadow, Willow/Aspen, Aspen Community, Aspen/Oak Community; Prairie Community; Clover Community; etc., etc.). 1.35 kilograms unpacked -- depending on destination extra shipping charges may apply.
