JOHNSON, WILLIS FLETCHER - History of the Johnstown Flood Including All the Fearful Record; the Breaking of the South Fork Dam; the Sweeping out of the Conemaugh Valley,. . . . .

Title: History of the Johnstown Flood Including All the Fearful Record; the Breaking of the South Fork Dam; the Sweeping out of the Conemaugh Valley,. . . . .
Description: Boston, MA / Philadelphia, PA: Edgewood Publishing Co, 1889. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This copy is in Good only condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have noticeable edge wear, rubbing, spots of paint on the spine, fraying, and more. The rear cover of the book has a patch of fading / discoloration (but is not mold). The inner hinges to both front and rear have cracking and have been repaired by a previous owner. The front pastedown page has a perpendicular crack to the paper and it appears the cover has been abused a bit. The endpapers have ground-in dirt and toning. The text pages are generally clean, though there are large spots of foxing throughout, and the pages are somewhat fragile. This is a solid reading copy, but isn't very pretty. "The Johnstown Flood (locally, the Great Flood of 1889) occurred on Friday, May 31, 1889, after the catastrophic failure of the South Fork Dam, located on the south fork of the Little Conemaugh River, 14 miles (23 km) upstream of the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The dam ruptured after several days of extremely heavy rainfall, releasing 14.55 million cubic meters of water. With a volumetric flow rate that temporarily equaled the average flow rate of the Mississippi River, the flood killed 2,209 people and accounted for $17 million of damage (about $490 million in 2020 dollars).
