This is a reproduction of one of Ernest Nister's moveable books which were originally published in the 1800's. "The original book, Merry Surprises, was first published around 1897 by Ernest Nister of London. Nister was among the best-known creators of movable books, and his rosy-cheeked, Victorian children illustrated here are as enchanting today as they were then. This reproduction features unique changing pictures, filled with fun and action, as well as the delightful verses from the original book." Transformations show a scene made up of vertical slats. When a reader pulls a tab on the side, the slats slide under and over one another to "transform" into a totally different scene. Ernest Nister, one of the early English children's book authors, often produced books solely of transformations. Many of these have been reproduced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art."
