Title: Mckinley Memorial 1901 Address to the Young People of Oakland, Cal.
Description: 0. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Handbill. B&W Illustrations; This is a thin handbill (approx. 9" x 4" ) with text only on the verso. The handbill is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There are several wrinkles to the corners of the handbill. This handbill touts and address that President McKinley gave to the children of Oakland, CA. On May 24, 1901, which was mere months before his death on Sept. 14, 1901. This handbill memorializes both the address in Oakland, and the recent death of President McKinley. "Although McKinley enjoyed meeting the public, Cortelyou was concerned with his security because of recent assassinations by anarchists in Europe, such as the assassination of King Umberto I of Italy the previous year. Twice he tried to remove a public reception from the president's rescheduled visit to the exposition. McKinley refused, and Cortelyou arranged for additional security for the trip. On September 5, McKinley delivered his address at the fairgrounds before a crowd of 50,000. In his final speech, McKinley urged reciprocity treaties with other nations to assure American manufacturers access to foreign markets. He intended the speech as a keynote to his plans for a second term. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good .
