Author: REYNOLDS, STEPHEN MARION Title: The Story of Barney Nolan
Description: Chicago, IL: Anti-Capital Punishment Society of America, 1909. Pamphlet. C1909. There is mention in Worldcat to a Barney Nolan -- but no reference to this pamphlet itself. This is a young adult short story written by Stephen Marion Reynolds, as a harangue against the newly revived death penalty. Stephen Marion Reynolds was a friend (and a somewhat biographer) of Eugene V. Debs. The pamphlet is in Fair only condition, with the front cover present, but detached, and the rear (plain) cover missing completely. The cover is noticeably foxed. The pamphlet is numbered pages 5-12. It is possible that a title page / copyright page is missing, and from the fact that page 12 ends in the middle of a sentence, that there is at least one more page to the pamphlet that is missing. The story itself is complete -- page 12 gives a postscript to the story which explains the story based on the philosophy of anti-capital punishment. "These are the expressions of a few of the thoughtful men of the world who have denied the right of the state to kill under any pretext whatever. Society is subject to the commandments and the law as much as is the individual..." Though incomplete, this item may be the only copy extent.. Fair .
