Variant of the 1831 edition which included excerpts from entries written later that 1831, including material written up until 1845. This book is in Very Good- condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping, rubbing and edge wear. The text pages are generally clean and bright, though there are spots of foxing throughout. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. There is a black and white illustration of Marks as the frontispiece. Starr. Baptist Bibliography #M2931 "David Marks (November 4, 1805 – 1845) was an American Baptist preacher. He was born in Shandaken, Ulster County, New York. At age 13, he set out on foot for Providence, Rhode Island. He walked 368 miles before arriving at Brown University. However, upon his arrival he was informed that tuition would be free, but no other funds were available for boarding or clothing. He then walked 368 miles back home. On June 11, 1819, he was baptized and became a member of the Freewill Baptist Church in Phelps. The following year he joined the Freewill Baptist Church in Junius." (from Wikipedia) "In 1827 David Marks (a non-Mormon minister) went to Palmyra and Manchester, New York where he “made considerable inquiry respecting . [Joseph] Smith” and learned from “several persons in different places” that Joseph was “about 21 years [old]; that previous to his declaration of having found the plates he made no pretensions to religion." (fairmormon webpage) Marks book is the first to mention Mormonism as a religion. Marks not mentions Mormonism, but went to Palmyra, New York to investigate the tablets and to speak to the witnesses about the Religion and the Tablets.. Very Good- .
