Title: The White Slave Another Picture of Slave Life in America
Description: London, Walter Scott, Ltd. ND [ca. 1890s] . Hardcover. pp. 355, ads. 8vo. Bound in original light brown cloth embossed in gilt. Prize bookplate (dated 1895) on the front free endpaper. Binding worn, spine slant, text shows some staining to preliminary pages, and across the bottom edge of the text block, but is otherwise clean; fair. Richard Hildreth (1805-1867) was a Massachusetts historian, author, and jurist. His most famous work was the six volume 'History of the United States' (1849-1852). His novel, 'The Slave; or, Memoirs of Archy Moore' was first published in 1836, and was republished a number of times, under various titles, including this title '(The White Slave'). It enjoyed great popularity and is said to have been the first antislavery novel. WorldCat lists seven different titles, all of which are - more or less - a variation of the two titles previously mentioned. Several of the editions are illustrated but our edition is not. There is no date of publication in it, but WorldCat suggests that this title was first published in 1852. Our copy was probably a later printing, as a review of the publisher's ads at the end of the book suggest that this book was printed in the 1890s.
