Spine gilt-stamped, with gilt-stamped title and decorations including 4-star general's bars. Front and rear boards gilt stamped with front and rear faces of Joint Resolution of Congress December 17, 1863 Medallion celebrating Mississippi campaign. Illustrated with maps, fold-out map in Vol. 2, and frontispieces in both volumes. Grant was reluctant to write his Memoirs, but he was persuaded to do so by Mark Twain in order to provide for his family. Grant raced to finish the volumes before he died of cancer, and barely did finish before he died. The book was sold by subscription, and was one of the great publishing successes of the 19th Century. ; 8vo. Near Fine with no dust jacket .
