Title: Paris Under Siege - a Journal of Events of 1870-1871
Description: London, Folio Society. 1982, First Thus. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. An As New unmarked copy in pictorial boards with an As New slip case. 221 pages. 7 illustrations. This is a contemporary journal of events in Paris from the fall of the Second Empire on 4 september 1870 to the fall of the Commune on 28 May 1871. L'Anne terrible began with the declaration of the Franco-Prussian War; a catastrophic war which France declared without any valid reason, and without preparation. Bellicose and ill-equipped, led by an ailing Emperor, an incompetent government, and by generals who were past their prime, she chose to go to war with Prussia. Seven weeks later, after a series of heavy defeats, the Emperor surrendered and the Second Empire fell. The Republic was proclaimed but the war continued. The most disastrous months were to come. As New/As New.
