Title: My Guru and His Disciple
Description: London, Eyre Methuen. 1980, First Edition. (ISBN: 0413469301). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine copy (Fine apart from an inscription to front endpaper) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 338 pages. The book is not a conventional sequel to Christopher and His Kind but it begins in 1939 when Christopher Isherwood arrived in America where he was to meet Swami Prabhhavananda, the head of a Centre in Hollywood for the study and practice of Hindu philosophy. The sometimes funny, always moving account of the Hindu monk who became Isherwood's spiritual mentor for over thirty years until his death in 1976 offers a loving but in no way pietistic account of their friendship. During the 1940's Isherwood lived for a time at the Centre and contemplated becoming a monk, a step much encouraged by the Swami, with whom he was translating the Gita at the time. C3A. Near Fine/Near Fine.
