Author: KOSTENEVICH, ALBERT Title: Hidden Treasures Revealed - Impressionist Masterpieces and Othe Important French Paintings Preserved by the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg
Description: London, The MInistry of Culture of the Russian Federation/The State Hermitage Museum/ Weidenfeld and Nicolson. 1995, First Edition. (ISBN: 0297835165). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy in black cloth boards with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. A large format volume of 292 pages. Over 270 illustrations, including 99 plates in full colour. This extraordinary volume represents in colour 74 important Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings - by Monet, Renoir, Pissaro, van Gogh, Cezanne, Degas, Gauguin, Tolouse-Lautrec, and many others - taken to Russia from Germany after the end of the Second Word War and stored since at the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Only two of the works, almost all of which had previously been part of several private German collections, have been reproduced in colour before. The paintings in the book were long thought to have been destroyed in the war. Only now has it been revealed that they spent the last half century hidden in the storerooms of the Hermitage, their existence a carefully guarded state secret. The special exhibition, which this book accompanies, held in the spring of 1995 in St. Petrsburg, marks the first public showing of any of the paintings in all of that time. PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.76 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST 5. Fine/Fine.
