Title: Stories on Paper and Glass - Pioneering Photography at National Geographic
Description: Washington, National Geographic. 2001, First Edition. (ISBN: 0792264347). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with VG+ dustjacket. A large format volume of 256 pages. National Geographic published its very first photograph in July 1890 - an event that down the line would cause a bit of furore at the Society, where a few scholars continued to maintain that photographs had no place in a scientific journal. Fortunately 19th century ideas of scholarly publication were swept away in a growing flood of images. Many of the 250 photographs in the book have never been published before. Selected from the Society's vast image Collection, they range from all over the world and take us from pioneering days when cameras were cumbersome novelties or rich men's toys up to the end of the legendary career of Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor, son-in-law of the Society's second president, Alexander Graham Bell. An inspired editor, publisher, photographer, and collector in his own right. Grosvenor retired from National Geographic in the 1950'safter more than half a century as its editor. This book is a tribute to his career. PLEASE NOTE: A HEAVY VOLUME OF 1.78 KILO UNPACKED WEIGHT WHICH WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST B2F. Fine/Very Good.
