Title: The Earliest Lives of Jesus
Description: London, SPCK. 1961, First Edition. Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A near Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket. ix + 134 pages. In this study of the early patristic treatment of the life of Jesus Dr. Grant points out that historical criticism is not an invention of modern scholarship. An examination of the exegetical works of Origen and his predecessors reveals an awareness in their authors of the historical problems presented by the four Gospels. In attempts to solve these problems the early Christian commentators often borrowed their methods and techniques from contemporary pagan writers. Dr. Grant considers these methods in a valuable chapter on Greek literary and historical criticism. His findings enable him to bear in his detailed and critical examination of the achievements of the Fathers, and of Origen in particular, in their interpretation of the life of Jesus. NOT EX LIB R1. Near Fine/Very Good.
