Title: Chamfort - Reflections on Life, Love and Society Together with Anecdotes and Little Philosophical Dialogues
Description: London, Short. 2003, First Edition. (ISBN: 1904095623). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. Nicolas Chamfort (1741-1794) was a man of his time, a love child of noble birth, who beacame a cult figure in pre-revolutionary Paris, but it was only after his death that he achieved the fame he had always longed for. In his room were found thousands of scraps of paper on which he had written his reflections on love, life and society, which have become a testament to his perceptive wit. In this first English language edition of its type, Douglas Parmee has skilfully translated a core selection of these reflections which provide a gripping portrait of the colourful characters of pre-revolutionary France and also a treasury of poignant, satirical humour. L. Fine/Fine.
