Working mainly from contemporary records, the author describes a nomadic aspect of Chaucer's England that is virtually extinct. These wanderers, merchants, pedlars, outlaws, preachers and pilgrims, forerunners of the printed word, served as a link between the human groups of various districts, bringing news of their neighbours and of the stirring events of the time.
