Martin, who is lonely and miserable on Shetland, where his parents have come to write a book about the island birds, is attracted to the ruined village of Settler, where he finds a curious silver knife on the floor of a cottage and before he can show it to anyone, he is attacked by a mysterious catlike creature who escapes with the knife. Who or what is the the cat man?. A local history buff warns Martin about a witch who is said to live on through her cat but Martin is convinced that his attacker was human.
