An historical novel set in 1568 where Matthew Morten has gone to sea and from a bible reading merchant's apprentice he returns four years later with a reputation that included mutiny and privateering and the nickname 'Maroon boy. Maroon is short for Cimaroon, a name given to escaped slaves who fought the Spanish in Panama and the English in Jamaica and it is known that Drake joined forces with the Cimaroons at one time to harass the Spanish, but where his motivation was gold, the Cimaroons wanted revenge on the white man. Matthew Morten's motivations were more complicated though he did not realise consciously what they were. NOT A BOOK CLUB COPY C3D. Near Fine/Very Good.
