Maroon is short for Cimaroon, a name given to escaped slaves who fought the Spanish in Panama and the English in Jamaica and it is known that Drake joined forces with the Cimaroons at one time to harass the Spanish, but where his motivation was gold, the Cimaroons wanted revenge on the white man.
