Title: Inventioni di varii Groteschi e ornamenti fatti in Anversa. Corn. Galle formis da F(rancis)co Ertinger.
Description: .: 12. S.l.s.d. (Antwerp, ca. 1680), suite of prints consisting of one engraved titlepage (242 x 158 mm) and 10 grotesque plates (244 x 120 mm), bound in 19th century half leather, papersize 270 x 170 mm, title bound in as second last plate, bound before these plates are two similar engravings, of which one by M.Dorigny, designed by S.Voüet. Extremely rare suite of 11 grotesque prints by the German engraver François Ertinger (Kolmar in Schwaben 1640 - Paris 1710), who resided in Antwerp for quite a long period. He was inscribed in the Sint-Lucas guild in 1678. The designs are by Cornelis Galle; probably the grandson of Cornelis Galle I the Older, as the grandson is almost a contemporary of Ertinger, being born in 1642.The fine printings show designs of grotesque panels with small octagonal or oval centre pieces which show landscapes of classical ruins. (Not in the Berliner Ornamentstich Katalog, nor in Würzbach). In april 2011 we could locate only 1 copy of this work in the National Library of Sweden ( WorldCat.org). .
