Bound in modern half leather, gilt title on the spine. Small tear at pp. 117 (without loss of text), last leave with some foxing, otherwise an excellent copy. The jesuit missionary S. Couvreur devised the EFEO Chinese transcription system which was used in most of the French-speaking world to transliterate Chinese. It was in use until the middle of the 20th c. It was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. ( Cordier BS 1617 ). Arriving in China in 1870 he published in 1877 his first dictionary : Chinese-Latin. This second edition (1890) of his Chinese-French dictionary is considered the best edition. The first edition is from 1884. The 1890 edition is enriched with expressions and sentences taken from the works of Léon Wieger and Joseph Siao. ( chinese ; dictionary; philology ; french ; chinese imprint ; ).. .
