Title: Hier beghynt een schoone boeck en[de] is gheheten Die vertroestinghe der ghelatenre menschen.
Description: Antwerpen, binnen die camerpoorte, int huys va[n] Delft. bi mi Henrijeeckert van hombergh, 26 Februario 1510, in-8°, 142 x 103 mm, 126 leaves ( 252 pp ) complete, title page with a very large woodcut initial ( Letter H), final page with a full page woodcut ( Canon plate, Christ at the cross). The copy is entirely rubricated and printed on heavy paper with wide margins. Binding: The spine is covered with a thick rectangular piece of leather, unto which the quires are sewn with visable threads via holes in the leather - a double row on the upper and lower end of the spine and x-cross in the centre. The endpapers or guards are two vellum leaves from a 15th c. liturgical manuscript, rubricated in red and blue. This whole binding is protected by an overlapping piece of supple vellum which is attached to the spine by sewing thread. This vellum is now completely loose, traces of the thread at the spine and the 8 sewing holes in the vellum spine are still visible. It is not clear if this binding is an example of a temporary binding which by good chance survived in this fine condition ; or if this was to be the final binding. ( final bindings of this stucture would of course have the same difficulty of surviving). The book was published anonymously. This is the third edition ( second in Antwerp in 1504, first in Leiden in 1502). The religious text can be situated in the tradition of the Brethren of The Common Life and similar works by the mystic author Hendrik Mande. Bibliog. Nijhoff-Kronen Kronenberg nr. 2149 ( only 6 complete copies ). BCNI Nr. 378 ; USTC 410068. Very well preserved rare Dutch devotional post-incunable in an extraordinary contemporary binding.. .
