The first work by Messenius (1579 - 1636) is Ragnvald Ingemundsson's Latin translation of the law of Magnus Eriksson. The three following works are by L.P. Gothus ( 1565 - 1646) , theologian, astronomer and archbishop of Uppsala. He wrote his ''Cometoscopia'' on the occasion of the appearence of the Halley comet in 1607. This work caused him to be reinstated by the king at Uppsala University were he was previously suspended from his professorship in astronomy. The two other works are eulogies : on the funeral of princess Sofia Gustavsdotter Vasa (Strängnäs 22nd april 1612) and the death of king Karl IX ; pronounced on the 5th january 1612. Bound in contemporary blindtooled vellum over wooden boards, with traces of leather ties. Stain at the lower board. Low end of spine slightly damaged with some loss of material, ex-libris removed from the first paste down, old manuscript ex-libris at the lower end of the first title page ( illegable ). First title dust soiled and with a few small wormholes (in the blank), further some minor spots as usual. On the whole a very good copy. The first work of Gothus (Cometoscopia) is very rare, we could only three copies via OCLC. .
