Nicolas Eymerich ( Girona 1320 - 1399) was General Inquisitioner of Aragon, Catalogne, Valencia, Majorca...During his career he was in close contact with several popes ( residing not in Rome but in Avignon). This manual of the Inquisition and how to deal with heresy, whichcraft, demony was first published as a book in 1578, so this is the second edition . The commentary is by Francisco Peņa The second part of the book consists of Papal documents regulating the Inquisition etc. . It details specific heretics and their beliefs, banned books, witchcraft, the errors of other faiths, as well as the technical legal processes of denunciations and trials, torture, and forms of excommunication. It became the definitive handbook of procedure for the Spanish Inquisition until far into the seventeenth century. Translations were still published in the 18th c. (e.g. Lisbon, 1762). This edition is rare outside Italy. USTC list 53 copies; but only 9 outside Italy. (whitchcraft;heresy;inquisition;). .
