Bohn, York Street, 1842, in-4°, 31 x 25 cm, (6) nn pp ( frontispiece + title) + 152 pp + (57/60) plates + 12 plates ( text complete, missing three plates in the main work n°s 22 , 56 , 57 ). bound in brown quarter leather, with boards covered with marbled paper, smooth spine gilt title. Top edge gilt. With a small modern bookplate on pastedown. Binding scratched and with wear at extremities, technically still sound. Interior fine and near stainless (apart from a small inkstain on the title page) , unfortunately lacking three plates. Splendidly illustrated book. First published in 1773, with a supplement of 12 plates added in 1793, this is a new edition (of 1842) of "The Regal and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of England" with critical notes by James Robinson Planché [1796-1880]. This was the first of Strutt's works illustrated with his own engravings. He spent a great part of his life producing similar works. They are still highly esteemed for the artistic quality of their engravings and colouring. Because it lacks 3 plates we offer this book at a non negotiable one fifth of the usual market price. .
