Bound in red contemporary quarter leather . Binding with some wear and use, Joints partly broken but still holding. Interior flawless. Text in French. Fine copy of this pageant book with nicely coloured plates. Félix de Vigne (1806-1862) painter and writer (in Dutch and French) was the designer of the costumes of this pageant organised in Ghendt in 1849 and which evoked the Middle Ages in Flanders , the Counts of Flanders. The artist , himself a history painter, was one of the first during this neogothic revival to strive for historical correctness. He also published a well illustrated manual on historical, mainly mediaeval, costume and weaponry to instruct his fellow history painters in the art of history painting.. .
