Title page with large woodcut vignet (Sybilla) ; second title within large woodcut architectural border. Bound in contemporary supple vellum with traces of ties, vellum soiled, old name in ink at bottem of title made illegible, interior fine and nearly without stains or fingermarks. Copy from the library of the Dukes of Arenberg, with the ''Nordkirchen'' bookplate tipped on to the first paste down. First edition. The author , auditor of the Rota, bishop of Sibenicen in Dalmatia (= Sebenico) from 1512 until his death in 1528 was an acquaintance of cardinal Wolsey and at one time involved in the matrimonial problems of king Henry VIII, as a judicial advisor to the Pope (see H.A. Kelly - The matrimonial trials of Henry VIII). His book was published posthumously by his nephew Joannes Lucius Staphyleus, who followed him as bishop of Sebenico. The nephew states in the dedicatory letter, addressed to Hieronymus Verallus, that this book escaped the Sack of Rome (1527) because his uncle entrusted him with the manuscript before the sack.
