Title: Our Seamen. An appeal.

London, Virtue & Co., 1873, small in-4°, 27,5 x 21,5 cm, vi pp + 89 pp + 57 photo engraved plates (of which 3 maps), bound in the original blue publisher's cloth ( spine repaired , some pages with slight foxing). Still a good/fine copy . This copy was given by the author to the 19th-century politician and member of parliament James Whatman Jun. (His heraldic engraved ex-libris is tipped in on the first paste down, together with a printed ex-dono slip '' With Mr. Plimsoll's Compliments ''). Later the book came in the library of the famous scientific books collector Harrison D. Horblit ( his printed name label also on the first paste down ). First and original edition of this very important appeal to enhance the safety of seamen. It lead to the Merchant Shipping Act of 1876 which regulated the load ships could carry and the world famous ''Plimsoll Line '' visible on all sea going ships.. .
