Jodocus Clichtoveus was born in the flemish Northsee coastal town of Nieuwpoort ( Neoportus ) in 1472. He became doctor in theology at the Sorbonne university, died as canon of Chartres cathedral in 1543. He was one of the first and fiercest opponents of Martin Luther. His ''Antilutherus'', here in first edition, is considered his main work. It appeared barely three years after Luther was expelled from the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Leo X. In this book he refutes the evangelical interpretations of the Protestants and defends the theological value of the Holy Mass and the holy orders. Apparently he was the first theologian of the Sorbonne to turn against Protestantism. .
