Text in French. Félix de Vigne (1806-1862), painter and writer (in Dutch and French), compiled this well illustrated manual on historical, mainly mediaeval, costume and weaponry to instruct his fellow history painters in the art of history painting. Over 200 plates give examples of dress and costumes taken from contemporary mediaeval illustrations. This book fits in with the neogothical revival of history painting which sought more authenticity in the depiction of historical subjects. .
