This is the first design manual on suspension bridges. It is divided into three parts; (1) an historical survey covering bridges built and projected ; (2) a comprehensive treatment of the static and dynamic characteristics of suspension bridges ; (3) the author's two designs, an aquaduct and the Pont des Invalides in Paris. Navier made two journeys to England and had contacts with Samuel Brown and Marc Brunel. This publication is the result of these travels. There was a second enlarged edition in 1830.
