Nice copy. Antonius Matthaeus, the second, not to be confounded with his father or his son, both also named Antonius and also active in the legal profession, was born in Marburg. He taught at Harderwijk and became professor at Utrecht university in 1634. This is the second and only Amsterdam edition. The first edition was published in Utrecht in 1644. This pioneering publication on criminal law is generally considered to be one of the first modern commentaries. He grouped his commentaries on the ''Digestes'' in a methodical order which comprised a complete system of criminal law. He already includes elements of natural law and Hugo Grotius' ''Jus belli ac pacis'' which appeared in 1625 is often cited. There were at least 15 editions before 1800. (See Dekkers pp. 111). .
