Description: .: 13. Lille, de l'imprimerie de Pierre de Rache, imprimeur juré à la Bible d'Or, 1613, in-8°, 14,5 x 9 cm, title with printer's mark + (1)(bl) + (18) + 103 pp + (29) + 324 pp + (31) + (1)(bl)(complete), contemporary full calf, on both covers the gilt coat of Arms of the Duke of Arenberg (see Jonghe d'Ardoye pp 640). Upper joint cracked, top turn in damaged, title-page marginally browned, a few (5) leaves at the beginning of the book with clear old waterstains, apart from these defects a sound copy. Rare work on commercial and financial practice at the beginning of the 17th century written by a priest of Bapaume (France) and published in Lille (Flanders), at that time still the second most important commercial city in the Low Countries (after Antwerp). The Genovese were still the traditional bankers to the Spanish crown, which at this period ruled the Southern Low Countries. The author explains the rules of credit and commerce with numerous practical examples. It deserves to be studied how his ideas are related to these of Doctor Navarrus (Martin de Azpilcueta), one of the main Spanish catholic theologians of the School of Salamanca, uncle of Fransciscus Xaverius, who published a treatise on money changing (Salamanca 1556). It is precisely a translation of a text from this doctor by Segard which is the only book available by him in a British library (Oxford Bodleian). .
