He achieved rapid success in Paris from 1878, being medalled at the Paris Salon in 1882 and a hero figure among the British and American artists in Paris as well as an influential member of the international colony of artists at Grez-sur-Loing near Paris. On his return to England, he became a close friend of Whistler until his painting of Whistler's mistress in the nude caused a rift between them. An important artist whose best work has rarely been seen in public. Near Fine.
