[Photoengraving is a plrocess that uses light-sensitive photoresist applied to the surface to be engraved to create a mask that shields previously selected areas, and so on]. Plates illustrate environmental environments in great detail and are printed on heavy stiff paper. Detailed references, errata-leave at end of vol. 2, register, list of plant-and animal-names, personal names. [Midden-Sumatra. Reizen en Onderzoekingen der Sumatra-Expeditie..1877-1879]. Dutch language scholarly narrative report, first volume published: about the dutch Central Sumatra Expedition, supervised by Professor Dr. P.J.Vet. The plates, after the expeditionary photographer D.D. Veth illustrate environmental sceneries including ethnic types and local architecture. The objective of this expedition, 1877-1879, was the cartograplhic survey of Hari River basin, including however research into natural environment and local population by various scholars. Expedition was organized by command of the Royal Dutch Geographical Society, led by J. Schouw Santvoort, A.L. van Hasselt, Joh. F. Snelleman and D.D. Veth. Scientific result a bit disappointing, however a detailed map of Central Sumatra was surveyed and drawn filling a gap and a number of ethnographic and anthropological objects of impoetance have been collected and taken to Holland. Costs of the xpedition dutch currency 50.000.00. Good to very good copy. (some minimal and very occasional foxing to blanks of plates, ow. a tight, clean copy0)
