Author describes in rather detail daily work and life of a Deli tobacco planter, an employee, and his work on a Tobacco estate which includes i.a. information about the hardships, poor treatment and brutalism towards estate coolies, concubinage, chinese mandoors during a period of rapid economic development of the region. It De-mythologizes the general popular opinion about life and work on large dutch and foreign estates mid-1920s beginning 1930s. Athor's début, higly praised and deeply rejected by those 'insiders' taking offence to the realism in this novel. Very gooed and clean copy, WITH DUSTJACKET, seldomly found present.
