Good untrimmed copy. Scarce. Despite having an alliance with Britain dating back to the Treaty of Windsor 1386 Portugal did not initially join the Allied forces opposing Germany and its allies at the beginning of the First World War. However tensions between Germany and Portugal arose about German U-boat warfare intending to create a blockade of the United Kingdom - at the time the most important market for Porguguese products. Clashes also occurred with german troops in the southern part of Purguguese Angola in 1914 and 1915. Tensions between Portugal and Germany grew as Portugal wished to comply with British requests and the will to protect her African colonies, so war was declared by the latter in which some 7000 Portuguese troops were killed.
