(vii), 200pp. Many captioned monochrome illustrations in text and full-page, of which group-portraits and single portraits of champions, thropies, spectators, sceneries, etc., index, register, bibliography name-lists, table of contents. Ample detailed frisian-dutch guide and glossary of terms, expressions in use with fiveball players. Good copy. The Five Ball Play, or in frisian Keatsen and in dutch:Kaatsen, is a very old one and probably originates from ancient Egypt. It reached europe through the Greeks & Romans, and is played, in variations, here since. (a deviation of the original play: a small leather ball hit by human hand, is probably the game of tennis or jeu de pelotte, played with a racket. The original game, previously only played by men, with modifications of course, is nowadays still played in the dutch Province of Friesland,in certain flemish Belgian Provinces near the french border and in northern Spain. The Official Dutch Royal Association has been founded in 1897, although a Permanent Commission was founded at Franeker (Friesland) in 1853. A curious collection. (bds. heavily shaved^& rubbed on rims, esp. on corners, clippings browning with age as usual).
