Odd volume 16 (complete) of thiss dutch language monthly journal, originally established in 1838, edited by W.R. Baron Van Hoëvell, later by P.Bleeker (et.al.), absorbed by the Journal Indische Gids in 1903. Van Hoëvell, a dutch protestant minister by origin served on Java and is known as a progressive opponent of the dutch colonial system in Indonesia and a strong promotor of the interest of the Javanese population. After his posting he became an important member of dutch parliament. This odd volume with a great number of multidisciplinary contributions, e.g. Anthropology, Ethology, Culture, means of subsistence, religion and tradition, history politics, economy customs, trade, commerce, colonial literature, public works, civil administration, general education on behalf of europeans and indonesians, reviews of recent publications, topography and geography, geology, journeys, travel tours of duty, military expeditions, the life and customs of Arabs, Chinese and Japanese population groups.
