Marryat established himself as an author in 1829 with his Novel Frank Wildman, or the Naval Officer. Almost all his novels have been translated into dutch; the strong language Marryat used has been censored however, i.e. the raw truth of naval life as pressgangs, corporal punishment (the cat with nine tails), poor food for the common sailors, &c..were omitted. His style however is full of humour, stern lessons and practical hints.
